COMPETITION FORMATS FOR 2017/18

The Manipulated Image Competition

All members who wish to participate will be given three images. You can then do what you want with any part of any of the images and combine it with another one (or more) of your own to form one composite image. All added images must be your own work and not downloaded from the internet. Using your skill, creativity and imagination you must produce one, and only one, final image which will be judged by members on its aesthetic appeal and originality. This is a projected image competition so there’s no need to get prints done, just email your image to the Competition Secretary.

The image size must be 1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high (max) for landscape format and 1080 pixels high (max) x whatever it works out at for portrait format and 72 dpi. The file format must be JPEG, medium quality level 6.

Newcomers/Beginners Competition

This will be on the same night as the manipulated Image Comp and will simply be an open comp for newcomers to the Club or beginners. This will be digital only and one or two images on any theme can be entered.

The image size must be 1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high (max) for landscape format and 1080 pixels high (max) x whatever it works out at for portrait format and 72 dpi. The file format must be JPEG, medium quality level 6. We will help out with the resizing of the images as it’s unfair to expect a newcomer to know how to do this.

The Annual Competitions

These are all unchanged from the previous year.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd with Highly Commended and Commended as decided by an external judge in each category.

Annual Colour Print

The maximum mount sizes will be 400 x 500mm to correspond with the YPU.

You can enter 4 images of any subject.

Annual Monochrome Print

The maximum mount sizes will be 400 x 500mm to correspond with the YPU.

You can enter 4 images of any subject.

Annual Projected Image

You can enter 4 images of any subject. They can be colour or mono or mixed.

The size of the images must be 1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high (max) for landscape format and 1080 pixels high (max) x whatever it works out at for portrait format and 72 dpi. The file format must be JPEG, medium quality level 6.

The Running Competition

Same format as last season with 5 rounds of projected images.

Therefore this is now just a single competition spread over 5 rounds each with a theme and into which you can submit two images per round or theme. To have any chance of winning you would logically think you need to enter 10 images although in theory you could probably win with 9 if they all scored very highly!

Each round will be themed as follows:-

Round 1 - Transport

Round 2 – Reflections

Round 3 – Nightime

Round 4 – Music

Round 5 – Street Photography

This is an internally judged competition and marks given by members are added up and then averaged out to get a score per image. Members scores will be added up over the whole contest (5 rounds) to produce an overall winner etc. This is about consistency over the season.

Please note that we will not be announcing any scores until the end of Round 5. This is simply to try to encourage people to keep entering all 5 rounds. Nobody will know who is in what position at any point, so hopefully nobody will be put off entering future rounds.

The aim is to critique each image on the night of each competition to give feedback that way.

Please also note that you can interpret a theme as you see fit. However, also remember that your fellow photographers are scoring the images and if they don’t think it fits the bill they may mark it down. So be realistic with your approach and not too loose or abstract with your interpretation.

Certificates will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each round, but the overall winner will be the one with the highest combined scores across all 5 rounds.

There will also be an award for the highest scoring individual image across all 5 rounds.

Photographer of the Year

This is an award for the person who scores most points over all competitions during the season.

President’s Challenge

The competition is a print competition which will be judged by an external judge. The theme for this year is:-

MOVEMENT

Colour or Monochrome – your choice (but see below)

The requirement is to produce 5 prints on a theme, which sit together to form a body of work, which will then be presented as a panel of images to the judge. The maximum mount sizes will be 400 x 500mm to correspond with the YPU.

Images can be portrait or landscape and can be displayed across one or two rows; either as a 5 or a 3&2 or 2&3, whichever suits. The panel itself will be your 6th image so to speak, so think carefully about how the images sit together and work as a theme. It’s unlikely that 4 colour and one black & white will work as a panel, but they might.

There will be a trophy for the best panel which will be the main prize, but there will be a best individual image too.

The idea is to try to get members to think about producing a body of work and not just an individual image. You can interpret the theme as you see fit.

Points / Scoring
It has been agreed again that this coming season we will not be giving out the scores for individual images, but we will give feedback / critique on them. A score of 12/13/14 etc doesn’t mean much; it’s more the critique that matters.
We will announce a 1st, 2nd & 3rd with Highly Commended and Commended in each competition

If in doubt about anything competition related, please ask, no matter how trivial you think it is. We understand it is sometimes difficult to grasp what is required or how to do something.
